Guru
Harideva stayed at Aswaklanta for three nights. Here he performed another most
important duty. In Bhagavata it is told that every human being is indebted to
his parents and forefathers and this indebtedness is called ‘Pitri Rin’. Our
body is the base of performance of all religious and worldly duties. This body, its sustenance, our family name, legacy etc are gifts given
to us by our parents and forefathers. We
come to this world through our parents. They raise us, give us
education, feed us and provide us with all possible comforts of life. Our grand parents
did the same duties for
our parents and the
same things go on generation after generation. Thus we are indebted to our parents and higher ancestors. But these debts are not like the liabilities
of a bank loan. Actually
by declaring this as our debts from forefathers, the scriptures create awareness in our mind to the duties and responsibilities towards
our parents and forefathers. Bhagavata tells
that it is not at all possible to repay Pitri Rin. But then also, we
should try to repay from our part by way of showing gratitude to them. We
should look after our parents and other living
ancestors at the time of their needs and in their old age. Bringing fame and
glory to one’s clan through noble activities is also one way of repayment of
Pitri Rin. Also, we can perform acts of charity in the name of our forefathers
to keep their memories alive. The scriptures suggest different methods of
offering oblations to be performed by son and offspring of deceased ancestors to repay their Pitri
Rin. For this purpose, performance of shraddha
ceremony of the forefathers prior to celebration of marriage etc. in a family are made compulsory
for a house holder. A house holder is advised to go on pilgrimage after
repayment of all his debts and debt from forefathers or Pitri Rin is also
included here. The ancestors of Guru Haideva were strict followers of all these
scriptural rules and regulations in their day to day life. Guru Harideva had experience
of these things from his childhood days.
Now, prior to the auspicious occasion of his pilgrimage all these things
came to his mind. There is a Brahma Kunda and a Vishnu Pada or foot prints of
Lord Vishnu at Aswaklanta shrine. People still believe that performance of
shraddha and offering of oblation to forefathers here bring equal results of doing
so at Gaya, the famous shrine of North India. Keeping all these in mid, Guru
Harideva performed shraddha ceremony of his ancestors and offered pinda or
oblation to them at Aswaklanta before starting his pilgrimage tour . (to be continued)
