The common people for the benefit of whom Guru
Harideva and his followers established Satra institutions in Assam are
not matured enough to understand the
Ultimate Truth as impersonal knowledge by spiritual practice through the Path
of knowledge or Jnana Yoga . They are
also not in a position to realize the Ultimate Truth as pure consciousness or Paramatma by practice of Yoga. Those people are simply interested in doing their
works and enjoying the fruits of those works in the form of happiness only. But it
is not at all possible since material activities bring both happiness and
sorrow. To make the things simple for those people, Bhagavata tells that the
God Almighty creates, maintains and annihilates the creation. We can not imagine
the volume of works involved in creation, maintenance and annihilation of the
universe. But God Almighty is doing that with a little part of his knowledge and
capacity. Again God Almighty is full in opulence and so he need not perform those
activities to fulfill any desire. Bhagavata also tells that the whole creation
is the body of the God Almighty, that is, everything in the creation are
included in the body of the God Almighty and nothing remains outside this body. We
may compare it with our own body. We have hands, feet, mouth, ear, nose and so
many other organs in our body and not a single organ of our body can exist
outside the body. Here, we can not have any desire to possess some organ of our
own body which is already a part of us only. Like that, since everything in the creation is
included in the body of God Almighty, he can not have any desire for anything in
the creation. So, Bhagavata tells that God Almighty is the supreme teacher of
the human society. He teaches us through his own way of activities and shows
the real path of religion. But people can not immediately change their tendency
of performing the fruitive actions. So the sages framed rules for performance of
fruitive actions and noted those rules in the scriptures. Vedic teachers or Gurus first
engage common people in fruitive actions according to their natural tendencies and as
per recommendations of the scripture. This is one way to make common people interested towards the performance of selfless action in a gradual manner. Through this process the common people can ultimately be brought to the path of devotion. Guru Harideva followed this principle to educate common people through his Satra Institutions
which we will elaborate at proper place. (to be continued)
