The last pilgrim
place visited by Guru Harideva was Badrinatha temple. Accompanied with a group
of Monks, Guru Harideva visited
all pilgrim places from Haridwara to Badrinatha and then came back to Kashi. We
already told that before expiry of his father,Guru Harideva completed the studies of all allied subjects including a course on Vedic grammar and made himself
qualified for the study of the Vedas. He completed those studies in the
educational institute established by his father Dwija Ajanabha at
Narayanpur. The facility for higher studies of Veda was not available in Assam
during that time. So, his father advised him to go outside Assam for higher
studies of the Vedas. But before doing that, his father expired and the program
was postponed . Now after completion of the pilgrimage tour Guru Harideva
decided to study the Vedas at Kashi. At that time, Kashi was a famous educational
center for the study of the Vedas and Vedic philosophy. A famous professor of
Vedas, named Shraddhananda, was the head of one such educational center at Kashi.
Guru Harideva became disciple of professor Shraddhanada and studied the Vedas
under him for two years. Then for another two years he studied the Vedic
Philosophy under the same scholar. After four years of study and successful
completion of the prescribed course of Vedas and Darshana he was offered the titles of “Vedacharya” and
“Darshanacharya” in a convocation ceremony held under the academic rules and
regulations of that time. Moreover, Guru Harideva used to make regular practice of Yoga since very young age. During his stay at Kashi, he got proper company and guidance for this and his practice of Yoga became
more intense. It is said that Guru Harideva lived upto his age of 140 years due
regular and correct practice of yoga. Thus after rigorous academic studies and practice
of Yoga for four years he became a qualified teacher of Veda , Vedic Philosophy
and attained perfection in the practice of Yoga . (to be continued)
