Religious Teachings of the “Satra” Institution of Guru Harideva-120 (হৰিদেৱ গুৰুজনাৰ সত্ৰানুষ্ঠানৰ ধৰ্মীয় শিক্ষা-১২০)

Self-realization is the only objective of the spiritual practices suggested by Guru Harideva. But Self-realization is the subject matter of discussion of the Vedanta, that is,  the knowledge section of the Vedas.  It is not possible for common people like us to enter into those complicated explanations contained in the Vedanta. For this reason Guru Harideva preaches his spiritual teachings on the basis of Bhagavata. According to him the Bhagavata contains simplified gist of the complicated topics discussed in the Vedanta. Also, to bring the  complicated knowledge pertaining to self-realization to the reach of the understanding capacity of common people,  the spiritual theories contained in the Vedanta are discussed in various different ways in the Bhagavata. After going through those discussions common people can easily understand what is self- realization and how to attain self- realization . Moreover, in Bhagavata the subject is made clear through elaborate life-stories of many self-realized personalities of different times. Based on those simplified explanations Guru Harideva tells that God has created our body with so many organs of various types. There are gross organs from head to toe. Mind, intelligence, senses etc. are  inner subtle organs of the body. Every organ of our body can be purified by engaging the activities of each of them in the service of God. For example, we can engage our feet to move for collection of  flowers and other essential items for worship of God. Similarly, by hand   we can collect and offer our offerings to God, through eyes we can see the deity of God, through ear we can hear about God, through speech we can pray to God, through mind we can meditate upon God and so on . Guru Harideva suggests that if one comes to the Sharana or shelter of Lord Krishna and engages the activities  of his whole body in the service of God as above, then his attachment with his own  body gradually decreases and   finally he attains self- realization or spiritual perfection.(to be continued)

Religious Teachings of the “Satra” Institution of Guru Harideva-119 (হৰিদেৱ গুৰুজনাৰ সত্ৰানুষ্ঠানৰ ধৰ্মীয় শিক্ষা-১১৯)

In Bhagavata it is suggested that one should keep himself fully engaged in materialistic activities until his mind is detached from material life or until he gains full faith on scriptural descriptions of God. That is, one can perform spiritual practice if by study of the scriptures and listening from spiritual masters  he is fully convinced that the material life is not based on truth.  Secondly , if one gains  full faith on the descriptions of the tributes, activities and glories of God as contained in the Bhagavata and other Vedic Scriptures then he is qualified for making spiritual practice. Out of those, the first category of people, that is, the people who can detach themselves from material life should make religious practice through the path of knowledge or “Jnanayoga”. The second category of people, that is, people having faith on  scriptural descriptions of God should perform spiritual practice through the path of  devotion or “Bhaktiyoga”. It is also said that the tough path of knowledge is not suitable for common people and the comparatively easier path of devotion  is  to be followed by  them. But in actuality we see that common people do not pay any attention to those teachings of Bhagavata and perform religious practices of various kinds as they like. Guru Harideva suggested that no spiritual gain can be attained with such types of religious practices and such people are liable to commit mistake from both material and spiritual sides of life. So, through his Satra institution Guru Harideva undertook the mission of guiding the material and spiritual lives of the common people  in accordance with the above injunctions contained in the  Bhagavata. He tried to educate them with the practical ways of living healthy and prosperous householders’ life in accordance with scriptural injunctions. Parallel to that he made proper arrangements for correct interpretation of the knowledge and instructions contained in the Bhagavata and thus tried to make them reliable and respectable in the mind of common householders. In this way Guru Harideva tried to make  common householders well prepared for performance of spiritual practice through the path of devotion on the basis of knowledge and instructions contained in the Bhagavata.(to be continued)

Religious Teachings of the “Satra” Institution of Guru Harideva-118 (হৰিদেৱ গুৰুজনাৰ সত্ৰানুষ্ঠানৰ ধৰ্মীয় শিক্ষা-১১৮)

Guru Harideva tells that Lord Krishna is the soul or consciousness of our body. Similarly, he is the soul of each and every living, non-living, big and small entity available in the creation. Since Lord Krishna is one and he is the soul of everything of the creation, so, he is also referred as the Super-soul.  Because of such unity when one comes to the shelter of Lord Krishna without feeling attachment with the body , his mind, intelligence and senses become fully occupied with thoughts of Lord Krishna and he sees Lord Krishna everywhere and in everything of the creation. Under such condition one can realize that he himself is included in the all-pervading existence of Lord Krishna and his existence as an individual body carries no meaning. Self-realization means realization of this truth and a self- realized person  is known  as “Jivanmukta Purusha”. That is, after attainment of self- realization a person  lives in his present body as “Jivanmukta Purusha” till the term of his body ends. Vyasadeva , Shukadeva, Bharata etc are some of the examples of such Jivanmukta Pususha mentioned in the Bhagavata. Guru Harideva is also said to be self-realized Jivanmukta Purusha and  we can find reflection of the characteristics of Jivanmukta Purusha  in his life story. Now, it is said that those self-realized personalities  lived in this material world in the society of common householders. Here,  we may ask  how such a person can live  a normal social life ?  Answering this question the scriptures tell that though the skin is an essential part of the body of snake, it periodically discards its skin. The discarded skin no longer remains part of its body. The snake never feels any attachment with it and lives a normal life afterwards. In a similar way in the mind of self-realized people the body is like the discarded skin of a snake. Thus it is possible for a self-realized person to live a normal life  in the human society without feeling any attachment towards the body.  Explaining its reason it is told further that due to combined influences of the accumulated unfulfilled desires of past lives along with desires of the present life a person feels too much attachment towards his body. A self- realized person remains free from attachment with his body itself and so he can live peacefully at any place and under any circumstances. (to be continued)

Religious Teachings of the “Satra” Institution of Guru Harideva-117 (হৰিদেৱ গুৰুজনাৰ সত্ৰানুষ্ঠানৰ ধৰ্মীয় শিক্ষা-১১৭)

“Uttama Sharana” or the best way of surrender as suggested by Guru Harideva consists of two parts. One part is freeness from attachment with the body and the second part is coming to the sharana or shelter of Lord Krishna present as embodied soul within the body. Out of those, by analysis of the differences of  the body and the embodied soul one can know that the soul is true and the body is not true. By such analysis one can also know that the body is the instrument and the soul or the consciousness activates it. It can also be known that in actuality the soul is not related with the activities performed by the body and the resultant happiness and sorrow. But this type of knowledge is comparative. This is not absolute knowledge free from any connection with the body. Scriptures tell that with this type of knowledge one can understand the nature of the body, the difference between the body and the soul and thus one can become free from attachment with is body. But  with such knowledge  one cannot know the soul or attain self-realization. Explaining its reason Bhagavata tells that the senses, mind and intelligence constitute our machinery for gaining knowledge. With this machinery we can understand the nature of our body, the difference of the soul with the body. But with this machinery it is not possible to know the soul. It is said that the embodied soul activates our senses, mind and intelligence first and after that only we can gain knowledge of things including our own body with  those instruments . We know that sugar makes other things sweet but  sugar cannot be sweetened by it. Similarly the soul or the consciousness makes the mind ,intelligence and senses active and make them  able to know other things but it is not possible for them to know the consciousness or soul which activate them . Then what is the way to know the soul? Answering it Guru Harideva tells that the soul is self-luminous as like as fire and the sun. In darkness of night we need light of fire to see other things but no light is needed to see the fire. When the sun rises we see so many things in its light but to see the sun no light is needed. Similarly, to realize the soul  there is no extra medium. Lord Krishna is present as consciousness or soul in us. When one comes to his shelter without any attachment with body , his mind, intelligence and senses become purified and then he can feel the presence of the soul or God in his pure heart as clear as the sight of sun in a cloudless sky, that is, he can attain self-realization. (to be continued)

Religious Teachings of the “Satra” Institution of Guru Harideva-116 (হৰিদেৱ গুৰুজনাৰ সত্ৰানুষ্ঠানৰ ধৰ্মীয় শিক্ষা-১১৬)

By the word “I” we mean our body. Father, mother, wife, children, friend, enemy and all other relationships are established and maintained with reference to the body. The rights we establish over money, land, building and other things are also with reference to our body. In this way everything available around us in the creation is linked with our boy. That is, without the body we cannot establish any relationship with other people, we cannot have possession over any property etc. or nothing of this world can be claimed as “Mine”. But in the Vedic scriptures it is told that the body is not our true identification or body is not the true “I”. The body takes birth, then it grows, then reduces and finally gets destroyed. After destruction of one body the embodied soul enters into a new body and takes rebirth. Through this new body relationships like father, mother, wife, children etc. are established with new people. Rights over new properties are established with reference to this new body. After passage of certain period of time in this situation this body also faces destruction and the embodied soul migrates to another new body. If the things are analyzed in this manner then it can be realized that the body is like a cover of the soul.  People change their shirts when they become old or torn out. Likewise, the embodied soul changes the body when it becomes old and invalid and enter into a new body. Analyzing the things like this the scriptures tell that the embodied soul should be our identity or true “I”. Guru Harideva tells that because of our strong attachment with the body we think the body as “I”. We think the people and material objects linked with our body as “Mine”. Thus, we come under the bondage of the material world. He further tells that Lord Krishna is the soul referred above. Also, Lord Krishna is present as embodied soul in all bodies. That is, the soul of the entire bodies available in the world is one and he is Lord Krishna. Guru Harideva suggests that by “Uttama Sharana”, that is, by coming to the “Sharana” or shelter of Lord Krishna without any attachment with  own body, one can convert his attachment with one particular body of one particular life to attachment towards the super soul or the single driving force that controls all bodies in the entire creation and can become free from the bondage of the material world. Through the teachings of his Satra Institution Guru Harideva teaches the practical ways of religious practices to be performed for this purpose. (to be continued)

Religious Teachings of the “Satra” Institution of Guru Harideva-115 (হৰিদেৱ গুৰুজনাৰ সত্ৰানুষ্ঠানৰ ধৰ্মীয় শিক্ষা-১১৫)

The difference between the body and the embodied soul has been discussed in some of the preceding posts. To make the subject clear Bhagavata compares the embodied soul and the body with fire and wood respectively. Fire and wood  are two separate items. But the fire can enter into the wood and burn it. Burning of wood is not possible unless it comes into contact with fire. Similarly, the soul and the body are two separate entities . But the soul  enters into the body and makes it active. Also, the body is inert  as like as a piece of wood unless it comes into contact with the soul. Again,  feelings of heat, cold, hunger, thirst, happiness, sorrow, ego , simplicity etc. are day to day experiences of our life. Bhagavata tells that all those experiences are related to the body and the embodied soul has no relation with them. If we think for a while we find that the soul is present in each body as its consciousness. Due to presence of consciousness, the body remains active and we become able to feel the experiences of life.  So, when it is told that those experiences of life pertain to the body only and the embodied soul is not at all related to them, then it becomes difficult for the common people like us to understand the point. Now, to make it clear the scriptures tell that fire has no shape and an axe made of iron possesses no heat and light. But when the iron axe is kept in contact with fire then it becomes red hot and the fire takes the shape of axe. This happens because of the close and long association of  axe with fire. In a similar way due to long and close association of  soul with body,  we wrongly feel  the characteristics of the body as characteristics  of the embodied soul. To make the point more clear Bhagavata   explains it  as follows. We see the image of moon in water. When the water is disturbed the image in water moves . But the moon in the sky has  no relation with such  movement of its  image. Similarly the happiness and sorrow etc. felt by the consciousness of the body are various different situations of the body. These are not situations pertaining to the soul, that is, the embodied soul has no relation with them. Guru Harideva tells that when one realizes  that he is  the soul and not the body,  that is, when one attains self-realization, then he  can clearly understand this point and after that  he never feels  happiness  and sorrow in accordance with various different situations faced by the body.( to be continued)
